INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

 

 

 

 

Scope and policy

 

The Portuguese Journal of Immunoallergology is the official journal of Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology. This is, actually, the sole Portuguese scientific journal exclusively devoted to the publication and disclosure of topics in immunoallergology, covering all age groups and a wide range of subjects; from allergen biology to its methods of collection or identification, from the assessment of the diagnostic methods utility to the evaluation of therapeutic interventions, from the identification of prognostic factors to the epidemiology of diseases and allergic sensitization.

The Portuguese Journal of Immunoallergology accepts for publication papers in Portuguese or in English, of Allergology and Clinical Immunology-related topics.

These papers should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief, along with the statement of authorship and/or conflict of interest form, to revportimunoalergologia@gmail.com.

All papers should follow the below mentioned regulations and it is up to Editorial Board to accept or reject them, or to suggest amendments, based on the opinion of, at least, two reviewers, who will anonymously analyze them.
The opinions, methods of presentation and conclusions expressed are of the authors’ exclusive responsibility.

 

 

Form and preparation of manuscripts

1. TYPES OF PUBHISHED PAPERS

1.1. Editorials – By the Editor-in-chief (or at his/her invitation), with no more than 750 words.

1.2. Review Articles – review articles may be solicited by the Editor-in-Chief or submitted with no previous solicitation, on current or relevant practical topics in immunoallergology. Text should be organized in a logical way, easy to read and should follow the below mentioned limits:

• No more than 7000 words (title, abstract, figures, tables and references not included);
• No more than 10 tables and/or figures;
• No more than 120 references.

1.3. Original Articles – Should include the results of the original experimental, epidemiological or clinical and laboratory research. When indicated, the obtention of both the subjects’ informed consent and the Ethics Committee’s approval should be explicitly mentioned. The text should be organized in sections: Introduction, Material and methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusions and should follow the below mentioned limits:

• No more than 4000 words (title, abstract, figures, tables and references not included);
• No more than 6 tables and/or figures;
• No more than 35 references.

1.4. Case Reports – They should be exemplary case reports, duly studied and discussed and they should include a short introduction, a description of the case(s) and a brief discussion, which will include a summarized conclusion. They should follow the below mentioned limits:

• No more than 1500 words (title, abstract, figures, tables and references not included);
• No more than 2 tables and/or figures;
• No more than 10 references.

1.5. Commented Articles – Solicited by the Editorial Board, they should comment published papers in specialty journals, within the 6 previous months, summarizing the paper and discussing its conclusions, as per the commentator’s point of view. No more than 500 words (title, journal name and authors not included) are allowed.

1.6. Letters to the Editor – Brief comments to papers published at RPIA or briefly and objectively reporting the results arising from both the clinical observation and the original research, not requiring a more extensive publication. No more than 500 words are allowed.

1.7. AllergYmage – Image of topics in immunoallergoly; clinical or of diagnostic testing image, which for its features, is worth noticing. The image should be of high resolution, in TIFF (Tagged-Image File Format) or JPEG format, and should have, at least 300 dpi, to allow half-page print, along with a brief descriptive comment, either in Portuguese or in English (no more than 100 to 200 words, each).

1.8. Other Sections – RPIA may also publish other sections (News, Calendar of Events, etc.) under the Editorial Board guidance.

2. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR REVIEW ARTICLES, ORIGINAL ARTICLES AND CASE REPORTS

The following information is mandatory:

2.1. First page “Titles and Authors”:

– Title in both Portuguese and English (no more than 15 words each).
– Names of the authors, including first name.
– Institutional affiliation of each author.
– Name and contact data of the first author and, when appropriate, of one of the co-authors, who will be responsible for the correspondence (Postal address, e-mail and telephone)
– Acknowledgements (if appropriate)
– Statement of financial support (if appropriate).

2.2. Second page “Abstract in both Portuguese and English”:

– In general, indication to the title and the abstract in both Portuguese and English should be repeated (with no more than 300 words for both review articles and case reports).

– In review articles, the abstract should make reference to the main review/discussion issues, with or without a brief introduction.

– In case reports, the abstract should be structured as follows: introduction, description of the case and discussion/conclusion.

– Original articles should be structured as follows:
• Rationale: Which question(s) led the study to be executed?
• Objectives: What was the purpose of the study?
• Methods: How was the study carried out?
• Results: What were the relevant results, either positive or negative, of the study?
• Conclusions: What was the most important conclusion of the study? If possible, try to summarize, in one single sentence, the key concepts, or the most significant diagnostic or therapeutic implications of the study.

– Key words. After each abstract, no less than 3 and no more than 10 key words should be proposed, in both Portuguese and English, in alphabetic order, preferably according to the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).

3. TABLES AND FIGURES

All illustrations should be presented in digital format of good quality. Each table and figure should be sequentially numbered in order of reference in the text, should be presented in an individual page, including the title and an explanatory caption, when necessary. All abbreviations or symbols are required to have the respective subtitles. Figures including photographs should be presented in TIFF or JPEG format, and should have, at least, a 300 dpi resolution; figures with lines (eg. Immunoelectrophoresis) or sets of dots (eg. immunoblotting) should have, at least, a 800 dpi resolution. Photographs or diagnostic testing should not bear the subject identity and should have the subject or his/her legal representative authorization for publication.

4. REFERENCES
References should be listed after the main text, sequentially numbered in order of reference in the text, presented in superscript, before comas or full stops. Authors are required to check whether all references are in accordance with both the original documents and the Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html) and if they use the journal title abbreviations conforming to those adopted by the Index Medicus (www.nlm.nih.gov).

The list of references should not include citations of unpublished material. References of books or papers accepted for publication but not published yet, should include the name of the journal and the reference “in press”.

In attachment 2, some general guidelines on how to accurately and properly indicate the references, can be found.

This contact may also be used as an alternative to the previous one, to submit copy of the full manuscript, in digital, Word format (texto) and in TIFF or JPEG format (figures or images), as well as the authorship statement, duly signed by all authors.

ATTACHMENT 1: STATEMENT OF AUTHORSHIP AND COPYRIGHT TRANSFER

The final acceptance of papers for publication is conditional on receipt of the following statement, duly signed by the authors:

“Regarding the publication and review of this paper by the Portuguese Journal of Immunoallergology, I do hereby declare that all copyrights will be assigned to the Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology, in the event this paper is published in the Portuguese Journal of Immunoalllergology.
I further certify that I’ve sufficiently participated in both the conception and design of this paper, in obtaining and analyzing the results and in its drafting, to assume public responsibility for its authorship. I have reviewed and consciously approved the final version of the manuscript which, I believe, represents a valid paper for publication. This manuscript, or other of similar content of my authorship, has not been published or sent to other publisher. I also certify that I will provide the data in which this paper is based on, if the editors or reviewers nominated by them so require.”
In the event of any financial support or conflict of interest of any of the authors, reference should be made to that fact in both this statement and the paper. If there is no conflict of interest, the following text should be added to the above cited statement:
“I do hereby certify that I have no affiliation or financial involvement in any organization or entity with direct financial interest in this topic or in the results discussed in this manuscript.”

ATTACHMENT 2: GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR REFERENCING

– For papers including up to 6 authors, all authors should be referenced. For papers including 7 or more authors, only the first six authors should be referenced followed by the expression “et al”. Here are some examples. :

Less than 6 authors
• Halpern SD, Ubel PA, Caplan AL. Solid-organ transplantation in HIV-infected patients. N Engl J Med 2002;347:284-7.
More than 6 authors
• Rose ME, Huerbin MB, Melick J, Marion DW, Palmer AM, Schiding JK, et al. Regulation of interstitial excitatory amino acid concentrations after cortical contusion injury. Brain Res 2002;935:40-6.

– Review articles:

Last name followed by the initials of the authors. Title of the article. Abbreviated name of the journal. Year of publication; volume number: first and last page. Letters to the editor or publishing short papers should be referenced after the paper title and in straight parentheses [letter] [abstract]. For supplements, the supplement number should be in parentheses, right after the volume number.

• Ex.: Glauser TA. Integrating clinical trial data into clinical practice. Neurology 2002;58(Suppl 7):S6-12.

When the author is an institution or a workgroup, the workgroup designation will be referenced, instead of the last names and the initials of the authors

• Ex.: Diabetes Prevention Program Research Group. Hypertension, insulin, and proinsulin in participants with impaired glucose tolerance. Hypertension 2002;40:679-86.

When the author is an individual, a group or an institution, the example below should be followed:

• Ex.: Vallancien G, Emberton M, Harving N, van Moorselaar RJ; Alf-One Study Group. Sexual dysfunction in 1,274 European men suffering from lower urinary tract symptoms. J Urol 2003;169:2257-61.

– Book:

Last names followed by the initials of the authors/editors. Title of the book. Number of the edition. City: name of the publisher; year of publication.

• Ex.: Murray PR, Rosenthal KS, Kobayashi GS, Pfaller MA. Medical microbiology. 4th ed. St. Louis: Mosby; 2002.

– Book chapter:

Last names followed by the initials of the chapter authors. Title of the chapter. In: last names followed by the initials of the publishers. Title of the book. Number of the edition. City: name of the publisher; year of publication: number of the first and last page of the chapter.

• Ex.: Meltzer PS, Kallioniemi A, Trent JM. Chromosome alterations in human solid tumors. In: Vogelstein B, Kinzler KW (Eds.). The genetic basis of human cancer. 1st ed. New York: McGraw-Hill; 2002: 93-113.

– Paper published electronically:
