Resumo Este artigo aborda a influência da figura de São Bernardo, fervoroso apologista da Ordem do Templo, no contexto da arquitectura militar erguida por estes cavaleiros nos séculos XII, XIII e princípios de XIV. Insere-se na investigação da tese de mestrado intitulada “Castelos da Ordem do Templo em Portugal, 1120-1314”, sendo dela parte integrante. Os escritos do doutor cisterciense permitem colocar novas e pertinentes questões, sendo prestada atenção à analogia entre as realidades do mosteiro e do castelo e ao simbolismo inerente à necessidade de defesa de Jerusalém e, em particular, do Monte do Templo. A análise da obra de São Bernardo permite abrir horizontes que em muito ultrapassam a esfera monástica, projectando outros entendimentos na compreensão da arte militar e religiosa erguida pelos Templários no Oriente latino e em Portugal.

Synopsis This article makes an approach to the influence of Saint Bernard, a fervourous defender of the Templar Order, within the context of the military architecture used by these knights in the twelfth, thirteenth and beginning of fourteenth centuries. It was written within the scope of the research for a master’s degree dissertation entitled “Castelos da Ordem do Templo em Portugal, 1120-1314” of which it is part. The writings of the Cistercian scholar enable us to raise new, pertinent questions, paying special attention to the analogy between the realities of the monastery and the castle, and to the symbolism inherent to the necessity of defending Jerusalem and particularly the Temple Mount. The analysis of Saint Bernard’s work opens new horizons that largely surpass the monastic sphere of action, casting new light on the understanding of military and religious art erected by the Templars in the Latin Orient and in Portugal.

Resumo Quando tomados no seu todo, os livros de viagens medievais formam um género multifacetado. São obras de carácter diverso, que têm na sua base propósitos igualmente diferenciados. No entanto, ainda que de forma variável e sem qualquer padrão estabelecido, o recurso comum a um conjunto de procedimentos narrativos garante aos textos que compõem este género diversificado uma forma literária autónoma no panorama da prosa medieva. Uma forma literária que, na essência, oferece uma visão bastante clara da concepção do mundo e da realidade na Idade Média, ao mesmo tempo que constitui uma fonte incontornável para compreender aspectos muito diversos da cultura medieval. Taken as a whole, the medieval travel books form a multifaceted gender. They are works of diversified traits, elaborated with equally different purposes. Nevertheless, although changeable in form and without a fixed pattern, the common use of a body of narrative procedures gives the texts that form this diversified gender an autonomous literary form in the medieval prose panorama. A literary form that, in its essence, offers a very clear vision of the conception of the world and of the reality in the Middle Ages, and simultaneously is a fundamental source to understand several different aspects of the medieval culture.

Resumo O túmulo de Lopo Fernandes Pacheco encontra-se abundantemente estudado por vários autores. No entanto, pouco se sabe sobre esta personagem que ocupou uma posição de grande destaque na corte do rei D. Afonso IV (1325-1357). Não descurando os estudos já realizados ao seu túmulo, este trabalho procura traçar o percurso deste valido régio demonstrando que a imponência do seu monumento funerário, localizado na capela de S. Cosme e S. Damião na Charola da Sé de Lisboa, poderá ser uma consequência da importância deste senhor que foi, talvez, a mais importante personagem do reinado de D. Afonso IV.

Summary The Lopo Fernandes Pacheco gothic tomb, located inside Lisbon’s Cathedral in S. Cosme e S. Damião Chapel, has been attracted the attention of many authors. Nevertheless few things are known about this man, who fills a prominence position in the D. Afonso IV royal’s court (1325-1357). The present work looks to draw the course followed by this royal vassal without neglecting the studies dedicated to the tomb itself. The magnificence of this funerary monument reveals the importance of this man that could be considered the must important personage under the reign of D. Afonso IV.
