**The santidade de jaguaripe revisited: tupi catholicism or cannibalism?**

Abstract This essay seeks to review recent contributions to the analysis and interpretation of the Santidade de Jaguaripe, a political and religious movement of indigenous origin that caused a great stir in the city of Salvador, Bahia in the 1580s. At the center of the debate are the interpretations of this phenomenon that have prevailed since the 1990s, and their acceptance or rejection by more recent investigations. The impressions presented here stand on the border between historiography and ethnology, and, in addition to providing an overview of the question, they are also intended to provide a reflection on the models for interpreting the contact between Europeans and indigenous peoples, especially in relation to the emergence of different forms of hybrid religiosity arising from the shock of the conquest and the subsequent Catholic evangelization.

Resumo Este ensaio busca passar em revista contribuições recentes para a análise e a interpretação da Santidade de Jaguaripe, movimento político e religioso de origem indígena que alvoroçou a Cidade da Bahia, Salvador, na década de 1580. No centro da reflexão, estão as interpretações que prevalecem sobre o fenômeno desde os anos 1990, e suas sobrevivências ou rejeições em investigações mais recentes. Situadas nas fronteiras entre contribuições historiográficas e etnológicas, as impressões apresentadas aqui buscam, para além de realizar um balanço sobre o estado da questão, contribuir para a reflexão sobre os modelos de interpretação do contato entre europeus e indígenas, sobretudo no que toca ao surgimento ou não de formas de religiosidade híbrida, saídas do choque da conquista e da catequese.

Women and Communal Discipline in the Portuguese Nation of Hamburg during the Seventeenth Century

Abstract Transgressions and their related punishments are among the most important tools for analyzing the values that have been imprinted within a given community. In addition to identifying the norm and the relative deviations therefrom, they also make it possible to interpret the occurrence of these phenomena in a specific place, reflecting a reality in constant evolution over time. In this article, I focus on the discipline exercised by the governing council of the Portuguese community of Hamburg between 1652 and 1682, in order to understand what this reveals to us about the social, cultural and religious history of that community in one of the most important periods of its history. My research focuses specifically on the role of women as the agents and targets of transgressive and disciplinary practices, respectively, in order to understand what these cases reveal to us about the attitudes and perceptions shared by the ruling class about women and their condition in the Portuguese-Jewish communities of Western Europe during the early modern period.

Resumo Matérias de transgressão e disciplina constituem uma das ferramentas mais importantes para analisar os valores impressos numa determinada comunidade. Além de indicar a norma e seu desvio relativo, possibilitam também uma interpretação situada desses fenómenos, reflectindo uma realidade em constante evolução ao longo do tempo. O presente artigo debruça-se sobre a disciplina exercida pelo conselho executivo na comunidade portuguesa de Hamburgo entre 1652 e 1682 para compreender o que revela sobre a história social, cultural e religiosa dessa comunidade num dos períodos mais importantes da sua história. A investigação incidirá especificamente sobre o papel das mulheres como agentes e alvos de práticas transgressoras e disciplinares, respectivamente, de modo a compreender o que estes casos nos revelam sobre as atitudes e percepções partilhadas pela classe dominante acerca das mulheres e da sua condição nas comunidades judaico-portuguesas da Europa Ocidental, durante o período moderno.

Fernando II of Portugal and his Royal Castellated Palace of Pena (Sintra): Between the Construction of Neo-Medieval Revivalist Castles and the Beginning of the Debate on the National Architectural Style in Portugal

Abstract The predominant spirit of the nineteenth century was incorporated into architecture, which adapted and reinvented itself. Great attention was paid to medieval architecture, due to its direct connections with a period considered to represent the origin of many nations. It was against this background that Fernando II of Portugal ordered the construction of his “castle” of Pena, in Sintra. This essay seeks to analyze the context in which the Palace of Pena was built, focusing on its symbolism, comparing it to other nineteenth-century castellated residences, and examining the debate in Portugal about the national architectural style and its influences on Portuguese architecture.

Resumo A arquitectura oitocentista incorporou o espírito dominante da época, adaptando-se e reiventando-se: a arquitectura medieval tornou-se objecto de atenção, devido às relações directas com a Idade Média, considerada a origem de muitas Nações. Foi neste contexto que Fernando II de Portugal ordenou a construção do seu “castelo” da Pena, em Sintra. O presente estudo pretende analisar o contexto no qual o Palácio da Pena foi construído, focando no seu simbolismo, comparando-o com outras residências acasteladas oitocentistas, e examinando o debate em Portugal sobre o estilo arquitectónico nacional e as influências na arquitectura portuguesa.

The Forgotten Library of the Botanist Friedrich Welwitsch (1806-1872)

Abstract The National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC/Museums of the University of Lisbon, Portugal) houses a forgotten treasure: part of the scientific and working library of the Austrian botanist Friedrich Martin Joseph Welwitsch (1806-1872), known worldwide for his work on Angolan flora. The museum’s collections began to be reorganized in 2012, enabling the library to be re-assembled, and 198 volumes were found. Although a great deal has already been written on the Austrian botanist, this paper seeks to explore the international scientific network to which he belonged, based on an analysis of his private library, correspondence, and working notes.

Resumo O Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (MUHNAC/Museus da Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal) guarda um tesouro, até hoje silencioso: parte da biblioteca científica e de trabalho do botânico austríaco Friedrich Martin Joseph Welwitsch (1806-1872), conhecido mundialmente por seu trabalho sobre a flora de Angola. A reorganização das coleções do Museu, conduzida desde 2012, permitiu que a biblioteca fosse reagrupada e 198 volumes foram encontrados. Embora muito tenha sido escrito sobre o botânico austríaco, este artigo tem como objetivo explorar a rede científica internacional da qual ele fazia parte, com base na análise de sua biblioteca pessoal, correspondência e notas de trabalho.

Abstract The e-JPH editors trace the important role played by Luís Adão da Fonseca in the conception of this journal at the beginning of the millennium. They also highlight the merits of his leadership over eighteen years, namely in obtaining financing and institutional partnerships, and also in the internationalization of collaborations and members of the advisory board.

Resumo Os editores do e-JPH descrevem o importante papel de Luís Adão da Fonseca na criação dessa revista nos inícios deste milénio. Destacam ainda os méritos da sua liderança ao longo de dezoito anos, nomeadamente na obtenção de financiamentos e parcerias institucionais e, também, na internacionalização das colaborações e membros do comité de aconselhamento.

Luís Adão da Fonseca and Iberian Political History

Abstract This article offers a brief overview of a part of Prof. Luis Adão da Fonseca's life trajectory: his stay in Spanish universities and archives, and his intense participation in the scientific activity of Spanish institutions, especially the Congresos de Historia de la Corona de Aragón and the Sociedad Española de Estudios Medievales. The result of his Iberian vocation has great visibility in the publication of relevant research works, in the organization of congresses, and in other scientific meetings. Moreover, new understandings of Iberian Medieval History could benefit from one of its most important lines of research, precisely the one we want to emphasize in this paper.

Resumo Este artigo oferece um breve panorama de uma parte da trajetória de vida do Prof. Luis Adão da Fonseca: sua passagem por universidades e arquivos espanhóis, e sua intensa participação na atividade científica de instituições espanholas, especialmente os Congresos de Historia de la Corona de Aragón e a Sociedad Española de Estudios Medievales. O resultado da sua vocação ibérica tem grande visibilidade na publicação de trabalhos de investigação relevantes, na organização de congressos e outros encontros científicos. Para além disso, novos entendimentos no quadro da História Ibérica Medieval beneficiaram de uma das suas linhas de investigação mais importantes, precisamente aquela que queremos destacar neste artigo.

Luís Adão da Fonseca: from a pioneering to a mature approach in the research on military orders in Portugal

Abstract In the course of his extensive research work, Luís Adão da Fonseca adopted a pioneering and innovative approach to the study of the military orders in Portugal, making a decisive contribution to the evolution of this thematic field in recent years. Over almost four decades, he opened up a series of promising questions and perspectives, becoming the mentor of a particular school and a major reference in this scientific area.

Resumo Entre a sua vasta obra, Luís Adão da Fonseca dedicou-se ao estudo das ordens militares presente em Portugal de forma pioneira e inovadora. O impacto do seu trabalho de investigação constituiu o passo decisivo para a renovação deste campo temático no seu quadro evolutivo das últimas décadas. Quase ao longo de quatro décadas, abriu questões e perspetivas de abordagem promissoras, tornando-se o mentor de uma escola e uma referência nesta área científica.

Fifteenth Century, the Age of Discoveries, by Luís Adão da Fonseca

Abstract This article analyzes Luís Adão da Fonseca’s contribution to the study of the Portuguese overseas expansion. Most of his work deals with a narrow chronology of roughly one century-the fifteenth century-and through his texts we obtain a broader and more detailed picture of this period as a time of intense and diverse changes, which started in Europe but, for the first time, were to have a dramatic impact all over the world. I attempt to show that he was a pioneer in inserting the dynamics of Portugal’s development within a European and Mediterranean context and combining this with its overseas activities to arrive at a single (and complex) historical process.

Resumo Este artigo analisa o contributo de Luís Adão da Fonseca para o estudo da História da Expansão Portuguesa. A maior parte da sua obra aborda uma cronologia limitada a cerca de um século-o século XV-e através dos seus textos obtemos uma visão global desse período, como um tempo de mudanças intensas e diversificadas, que começaram na Europa, mas, pela primeira vez, tiveram repercussões relevantes por todo o mundo. Realço, por isso, que foi um pioneiro na integração das dinâmicas de Portugal com a Europa e o Mediterrâneo com as actividades ultramarinas num único (e complexo) processo histórico.

Luís Adão da Fonseca: An Academic Master

Abstract As an homage and as a memory exercise, the author seeks to trace the academic path of Luís Adão da Fonseca since he returned to Portugal in 1981, after a prolonged stay in Spain since 1973. As his close collaborator, both as an assistant and also associated with various projects that he carried out, especially around the alignment between Portuguese and Spanish medievalists (who for decades almost always ignored each other), it is worth mentioning the process of creating of the Portuguese Society of Medieval Studies, of which the author was a close witness. In this same sense, it is important to mention the impulse given to the organization of the Luso-Spanish Journeys of Medieval History or to the creation of Chairs on Medieval History of Portugal and Spain in several universities in both countries. Luís Adão da Fonseca supported my contact with Spanish universities and historiography, to which I remain very close, while at the same time encouraged the beginning of career as a professor and offered me the example of an ethical posture as a teacher and as a researcher. He was essential in my formation as an academic in its various aspects, reasons that make him, along with José Mattoso, one of my Mentors.

Resumo Num misto de homenagem e de exercício de memória, o Autor procura traçar o percurso académico de Luís Adão da Fonseca desde que regressou a Portugal, em 1981, depois de uma prolongada estadia em Espanha, desde 1973. Seu colaborador próximo, quer como seu Assistente mas também associado a vários projectos que levou a cabo, sobretudo em torno da aproximação entre os medievalistas portugueses e espanhóis, que durante décadas se tinham quase sempre ignorado, fui testemunha privilegiada no processo de criação da Sociedade Portuguesa de Estudos Medievais, no impulso dado à realização das Jornadas Luso-Espanholas de História Medieval ou na criação de Cátedras sobre História Medieval de Portugal e de Espanha em várias universidades dos dois países. Ao abrir-me a porta das universidades e da historiografia espanholas, das quais sou muito próximo, por outro lado, o pelo seu apoio permanente no início da minha carreira como professor, e a sua postura ética como docente e como investigador, Luís Fonseca foi essencial na minha formação como académico nas suas diversas vertentes, razões que fazem dele, junto com José Mattoso, um dos meus Mestres.

Luís Adão da Fonseca: from the CNCDP to the IC, an awareness of himself

Abstract Luís Adão da Fonseca held two positions of the utmost interest for his career. With different profiles, but still with various affinities, both roles allowed him to experience new skills, and to carry out-especially at CNCDP-some initiatives that he had been desiring to accomplish for a long time. This is a personal testimony about those years that truly offered him several challenges, which to a certain extent shaped his way of being, proving to be priceless experiences for his later career.

Resumo Luís Adão da Fonseca ocupou dois cargos com imenso interesse para a sua carreira. Com perfil diferente, mas, ainda assim, com muitas afinidades, ambos os cargos lhe permitiram experimentar novos desafios e realizar, sobretudo na CNCDP, algumas iniciativas que desejava colocar em prática há muito tempo. Este é um testemunho pessoal sobre esses anos que, em boa verdade, lhe ofereceram diversos reptos que, em certa medida, moldaram a sua maneira de ser, revelando-se inestimáveis para o seu percurso posterior.
