Porque possibilitou a Polícia Internacional e de Defesa do Estado/Direcção-Geral de Segurança (PIDE/DGS) a eclosão do golpe militar, em 25 de Abril de 1974? Quais foram os motivos para que a sede dessa polícia política não tivesse sido um dos primeiros alvos do Movimento das Forças Armadas nessa data que marcou o fim do regime ditatorial português? Este texto propõe-se responder a estas perguntas, abordando esse episódio menos conhecido da tomada da sede da polícia política nessa data libertadora, revelador de que, como sempre acontece num acontecimento de ruptura, terá havido diversos objectivos no golpe militar de 25 de Abril. E, no entanto, a tomada da sede da PIDE/DGS, só na manhã de 26 de Abril de 1974, marcaria o início de um processo revolucionário em Portugal.

Why did the PIDE/DGS (the Portuguese political police) make it possible for the military coup to move forward on April 25, 1974? What reasons account for why the headquarters of this political police were not one of the first targets of the Armed Forces Movement on the date that marked the end of the Portuguese dictatorial regime? This article aims to answer these questions, addressing one of the least known episodes associated with that moment of liberation, revealing that, as is usual with an event of rupture, there were several objectives in play underlying the military coup of April 25th. And yet, the takeover of the DGS headquarters, occurring only on the morning of April 26, 1974, would mark the beginning of a revolutionary process in Portugal.

Pourquoi la PIDE/DGS [police politique portugaise] a-t-elle permis l’éclosion du coup militaire du 25 avril 1974 ? Quelles ont été les raisons pour que le siège de cette police politique n’ait pas été l’une des premières cibles du Mouvement des forces armées lors de la date qui a marqué la fin du régime dictatorial portugais ? Ce texte vise à répondre à ces questions, en abordant cet épisode moins connu de la prise du siège de la police politique à cette date libératrice, révélant que, comme cela arrive toujours en cas d’évènement de rupture, le coup d’État militaire du 25 avril avait plusieurs objectifs. Et pourtant, la prise du siège de la PIDE/DGS, seulement dans la matinée du 26 avril 1974, marquerait le début d’un processus révolutionnaire au Portugal.
