Abstract
RIBEIRO, Luiz César de Queiroz and SANTOS JUNIOR, Orlando Alves dos. Democracy and the city: social division in the city and citizenship in Brazilian society. Anál. Social [online]. 2005, n.174, pp.87-109. ISSN 0003-2573.
A feature of contemporary debate on the impact of globalization on large cities has been the hypothesis that a new social and spatial order is emerging, in which rich and poor are socially divided, space is fragmented, and elites control a deformed polyarchic political order. In this article we look at some aspects of this hypothesis in the light of our research on changes and continuities in the social, spatial and institutional order of the Brazilian metropolis, in which segregation, selective aggregation and the disaggregation of political life are highlighted by some of the literature as the new principles of social interaction in the Brazilian city.
