Abstract
SANTOS, Lourdes and TAVARES, Mário. Soil seed Bank and Out-Planting Modalities in the Protection Zone of Maritime Pine Littoral Dunes. Silva Lus. [online]. 2011, vol.19, n.1, pp.85-98. ISSN 0870-6352.
The soil seed bank is quantified and its dynamics analysed considering the previous list of spontaneous species occurrence, annual climatic variables and the performance of Pinus pinaster Aiton tree stands of the protection belt area of Leiria National Forest. The behaviour of total seeds of shrubs and non gramineousherbaceous is analysed and germination rate is evaluated. Soil bank shrub seeds stability is analysed, and the relationships between seed germination rate in four stand installation modalities - out-planting with and without brushwood control, seedling and utilization of natural pine regeneration - and its depth in the soil profile are established during spring and autumn. The amount of seeds in the soil seed bank is higher in autumn relatively to spring and up to 5 cm depth, but the germination vitality is greater in the lower layer up to 8.5 cm. Non gramineous herbaceous seeds predominate in comparison with those of shrubs. Gramineous seeds are few and those of arboreous are residual. As expected, the soil seed bank is better stocked in the treatments with denser vegetation and, accordingly, its annual germination rate is also larger.
