Abstract

PADILHA LORDAO, Hanna et al. Relation of hearing and linguistic skills to learning: The teacher's look. Rev. Port. de Educação [online]. 2022, vol.35, n.1, pp.84-101.  Epub July 18, 2022. ISSN 0871-9187.  https://doi.org/10.21814/rpe.20795.

The objective of this study was to investigate teachers' knowledge about the relationship between hearing and language capabilities in the learning process, educational speech therapy, and the training profile of teachers in the early years of basic schooling in Brazil. It is an exploratory quantitative and qualitative study conducted with 488 teachers of the public-school system of the county of Recife/PE/Brazil. The data were collected through a structured questionnaire survey applied during monthly continued education meetings for teachers. The results of the survey revealed that teachers generally recognize the importance of this study subject; however, they do not feel prepared to deal with it at school and do not have specific knowledge about hearing processing. Consequently, referrals to health specialists because of learning problems are frequent without considering hearing capabilities. The study showed that teachers know the importance of the subject and do not have expertise on the relevance of hearing and language capabilities for learning and student development and the role of the speech therapist in the school environment.
