Abstract

Acute rhinosinusitis is defined as an inflammation of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses lasting <4 weeks, caused by microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria or fungi. Known also as common cold, acute rhinosinusitis is often treated as a trivial entity, although it presents several important particularities whose knowledge is essential to optimize the clinical and treatment approaches. This article aims to summarize the main characteristics of acute rhinosinusitis, in what concerns its pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, differential diagnoses and appropriate management, following a representative case report of the disease.
