Abstract
FLOR, Susana Varela. “The Palace of the Soul Serene”: Queen Catherine of Braganza and the Consumption of Tea in Stuart England (1662-1693). e-JPH [online]. 2021, vol.19, n.2, pp.171-191. Epub Dec 31, 2021. ISSN 1645-6432. https://doi.org/10.26300/90dv-xn35.
The history of tea in Portugal is inextricably linked to the figure of Catherine of Braganza (1638-1705). The consumption of this drink was one of the most distinctive features of the Queen of England. The first part of this article examines the primary sources that historiography has tended to use in order to discuss the question of the introduction of tea into Stuart England. It will then look at the culture of agasalho in Portugal and national eating and drinking habits. Finally, based on assorted information, it will explain how tea became associated with the Queen of England, and examine its significance in her daily life.
