Abstract

In a period of three decades, China has reemerged as one of the global economic powers. Today it is the world´s second largest economy, leading manufacturer, largest merchandise exporter, second-largest merchandise importer, second- -largest destination of foreign direct investment (FDI), largest holder of foreign exchange reserves and largest creditor nation. This article will seek to analyse: firstly, the factors behind the economic rise of China; secondly, its impact on global economic governance and; finally, how the success has brought new domestic and international challenges.
