BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of psychosocial care education in the medical school of a Public University of Rio de Janeiro involves the simultaneous articulation of changes in several dimensions and interrelated in political-ideological and theoretical-practical fields. OBJECTIVES: Was sought to examine the limits of theoretical-practical teaching of mental health in the training of health professionals and highlight the use of institutional socio-clinical methodology to carry out research linked to education and health. METHODS: Intervention research with a qualitative approach, carried out in a municipality of Rio de Janeiro from 2013 to 2014, using the institutional socio-clinical method in its form of institutional analysis of practices. Data were collected through a daily research, the student’s reports and collective interview performed with them. The research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Educational Foundation Serra dos Órgãos with CAEE 22980513.8.0000.5247 on 21/10/2013. RESULTS: Limits of theoretical-practical teaching of mental health in vocational training are highlighted; the effects of time to grasp the theoretical-practical contribution of mental health; the perception of the mental health system, and the excessive appreciation of expert in mental health care. CONCLUSIONS: It is felt that, despite the limitations, the discussions between students, teachers and health professionals allowed the elaboration of some instituting proposals indicating the construction of an embryonary new practice in psychosocial care.
