Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) challenged the global social tissue at unprecedented levels. Countries closed their borders, suspended certain freedoms of their citizens, interrupted social and economic activities, and participated in a global effort to help stop the pandemic. This article is an invitation to ponder the global zeitgeist when the disease started, panic reigned supreme, and the transmission pathway was mostly unknown. Social media gained more stage, allowing a dispute between reliable and dubious information sources for the citizen’s attention yet more international collaboration. The media drew considerable attention to two controversial incidents: the outbreak of COVID-19 in the Diamond Princess cruise and Li Wenliang’s early outbreak alert. The pandemic stimulated creativity and initiative for problem-solving and, more importantly, brought up a concept: the new normal.
