This study aims to realize a survey and organization of all information relating to the population that appealed to the Consultation Psychotherapy of the Psychiatry Service, Hospital de Santa Maria - North Lisbon Hospital Centre in the period january 2009 to february 2012, in order to describe their psychological and psychopathological characteristics and the association of demographic, social, cultural and psychological. The sample, consists of 994 elements, mainly women. The nosological psychiatric diagnoses (DSM IV TR) Axis I with the highest percentage are Depressive disorders, followed by Anxiety. On Axis II the highest percentage are on the Boderline Personality Disorder, followed by the Dependent and Histrionic. Among various factors identified as triggers of psychological distress, we highlight the marital conflict and emotional. Concerning the problems of childhood and adolescence, violence and family disputes get the highest percentages in all age groups. Proposals are made for the organization of screening in outpatient psychotherapy and valued the relationship between physicians and clinical psychologists and patients with rapid signaling criteria for psychological counseling. The study reveals a clear need for an investment in primary care, integrating a psychological approach.
