Abstract
NETO, Prodamy Pacheco; OLIVEIRA, Antônio Anderson Ramos de and ROCHA, Maria de Fátima Brito Fontenele. Evaluation of comorbidities associated with obesity before and after bariatric surgery in obese individuals. Motri. [online]. 2018, vol.14, n.1, pp.17-122. ISSN 1646-107X.
The aim of the present study was to assess the comorbidities associated with obesity pre- and post- bariatric surgery by obese patients. A cross-sectional quantitative analysis was conducted in a public hospital at Fortaleza/CE. The comorbidities presented by 112 patients pre- and post-surgery were investigated. The most prevalent conditions were cardiorespiratory diseases in the pre-surgery period and arthritis in the post-surgery period. Diabetes, despite not being the most prevalent disease, showed a 100% reduction post-surgery. It was concluded that bariatric surgery is an important intervention against obesity, as it may induce not only a better quality of life, but also significantly lowers other comorbidities.
Keywords : obesity; comorbidities; bariatric surgery.
