Abstract

Among non-communicable chronic diseases, Diabetes Mellitus is highlighted by its morbimortality and it is presents a considerable risk factor to other circulatory pathologies. Growing obesity is one of the possible reasons for the growing DM and hypertension prevalence, which significantly impairs quality of life. This was a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study conducted in a public health unit. Participants were recruited among type 2 DM female patients, aged over 18 years. A total of 30 females, with a mean age of 61 years and predominantly elderly (n=19) underwent anthropometric evaluations targeting measures which are typically correlated with obesity. Body mass index was 29.22 ± 14.84 kg/m2, waist circumference was 100.16 ± 36.84cm, waist to hip ratio was 0.98 ± 0.13, waist to height ratio was 0.68 ± 0.18 and conicity index was 1.40± 0.39. It was found that the majority of participants presented overweight or obesity, with a high index of abdominal obesity as suggested by the combination of the four anthropometric measures (waist, waist to hip ratio, waist to height ratio and conicity index). It was concluded that type 2 DM condition was probable due to the abdominal fat, thereby highlighting the need to improved nutritional intake and exercise in this population.
