Abstract

Ceci n'est pas un autoportrait: the elusiveness of the diagrammatic identity in Helena Almeida. Estúdio [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.12, pp.175-183. ISSN 1647-6158.

This article looks into the process of construction and deconstruction of identity in Helena Almeida's work, in light of Deleuze's understanding of "diagram". The artist appears to make use of three diagrammatic practices related to her use of line, stain and materialization of that line. The classic paradigm of self-portrait - through which the author's identity is known - is dismantled in favor of a transgressive becoming-woman of the spectator.

Keywords : Helena Almeida; diagram; self-portrait; becoming-woman; identity; Deleuze.
