Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Ronaldo. The real reading cabinet of Claudio Garcia or how an artist sediments time. Estúdio [online]. 2020, vol.11, n.29, pp.146-155.  Epub Mar 31, 2020. ISSN 1647-6158.

The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the work of Brazilian visual artist Claudio Garcia, with a focus on his “Hour Books”. Those are handcrafted pieces the artist has been working on for decades. Through multiple poetic techniques (engraving, painting, drawing, collage, writing), Claudio overlaps materials and builds thick layers in each page of his books. Such overlapping ultimately creates powerful poetic places in his Hour Books. It is a kind of a palimpsest through which the artist presents us with different temporal moments and memoirs of the “things” and of ourselves.

Keywords : Hour books; Palimpsest; Temporality; Memoir; Art.
