Abstract
VEIGA, Mariana Novais et al. Massive Hemoperitoneum from Uterine Leiomyoma. Arq Med [online]. 2010, vol.24, n.1, pp.09-11. ISSN 2183-2447.
Laparoscopy or exploratory laparotomy for hemoperitoneum is a relatively common procedure in gynecology. The most frequent causes are ruptured ectopic pregnancy, hemorrhagic corpus luteum and twisted adnexa. An uncommon cause of hemoperitoneum is rupture of a vein overlying a leiomyoma. An increase in abdominal pressure by mechanical stress (trauma, sexual intercourse, menstruation) can lead to rupture of superficial veins. The authors describe a case of acute abdomen caused by spontaneous rupture of a vein overlying a leiomyoma in a nulliparous 33 year old woman, which was treated in our hospital. The histological examination revealed an epithelioid leiomyoma of uncertain behavior.
Keywords : leiomyoma; hemoperitoneum; acute abdomen.
