Abstract

SANTANA, Rita. Which wallpaper? A Reading of the tale “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2018, n.39, pp.93-109. ISSN 0874-6885.

From its first edition in 1892, “The Yellow Wallpaper” has been subject of several studies. In the nineteenth century it was understood as a description of insanity. And from the 1970s onwards, feminist analysis of the tale sought to emphasize the social and economic conditions that drive women to madness. The present study focuses on the narrative duplicity of the text, interpreted as a metaphor of the internal state of the narrator. Furthermore, it questions the extent to which what appears to be the loss of mental health might exactly be its recovery.

Keywords : literature; female insanity; internal resources; unconscious; narrative duplicity.
