Abstract
ROCHA, Janete and MENDES, António Pedro. Food Contact Materials - Plastic in Food: A threat?. Acta Port Nutr [online]. 2019, n.17, pp.28-33. ISSN 2183-5985. https://doi.org/10.21011/apn.2019.1705.
The wide usage of plastics, in particular those of single use, and the consequent production of residues, represents a threat to marine biodiversity, local and global economy and potentially to human health. Ubiquitous and chronic exposure to contaminants such as bisphenol A and some phthalates, known as probable endocrine disruptors and with the association to various human diseases, make the principle of precaution naturally assumed. In this context, some intervention proposals are presented in regard of the utilization and unnecessary exposure to plastics and contaminants, based on two essential axes: individual intervention, where the Nutritionist should develop a holistic approach towards food and be a fundamental subject on the shift of attitudes and behaviors, and governmental intervention.
