Abstract
MARTINS, Anna Júlia Karini and FARIAS, Letícia Stander. Research on speech intelligibility and its relevance for teaching english pronunciation. Diacrítica [online]. 2016, vol.30, n.1, pp.67-81. ISSN 0807-8967.
Based on the EFL learners' needs and objectives and on previous studies regarding the theme, this study aims at relating research findings on intelligibility and pronunciation teaching. The data involves free conversations between Brazilian English learners and American listeners, both familiar and not familiar with Brazilian Portuguese, and the analysis of questionnaires answered by the listeners. The results confirm that the listeners' familiarity with the speakers' mother tongue is a relevant variable. Furthermore, it was verified that the exposure to different English accents is a variable which, according to the listeners' perception, facilitates interaction.
