Abstract
SANZ, Itziar Reguero. Press, politics and society during the debates of the Spanish Constitution of 1978. População e Sociedade [online]. 2019, n.31, pp.180-190. Epub June 15, 2021. ISSN 0873-1861.
The present investigation analyzes the main issues that were highlighted during the presentation of the Spanish Constitution (1977-1978) in three spheres: politic, journalistic and social. The methodology to achieve this objective is based on a triple aspect. At first, the front pages and editorials of the main newspapers of Madrid in that time was analyzed: ABC, Diario 16 and El País. On the other hand, interviews were carried out with journalists who worked in the press and, finally, a sample of surveys of the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas was examined. The results show that the trending consensus among the political parties was endangered several times during the process and, also, underscore the prominent role of the press as a counter-power during the first years of the Transition, as well as the general lack of awareness of society about the constitutional project.
