Abstract
RODRIGUES, Celeste and LOURENCO-GOMES, Maria do Carmo. Longitudinal study of spelling proficiency in 2nd and 4th grades: the phonological structures /e/, /eI/ and /oU/. Diacrítica [online]. 2016, vol.30, n.1, pp.113-137. ISSN 0807-8967.
The mastery of orthography can be achieved by improving children's knowledge of language. This multi-step process implies the stimulation of competences using different tasks. Children who are good skilled at notice basic contrasts of his/her language and at segmental manipulation of the sounds do not always do well in written, the same way good speakers are not necessarily better writers. There are properties of the orthographic system of Portuguese that for several reasons (e.g., no relation between oral and written forms and orthographic complexity) can lead children to spell unconventional forms. Quantitative and qualitative longitudinal data of unconventional forms involving three types of phonological structures (/e/, /eI/, /oU/) from an online corpus of writing and speech of children in primary school (2nd and 4th grades) are presented. These data may allow us to understand what is more and less important to teach in these two moments of the process of learning to spell.
