Abstract

MONTEIRO, Rodrigo Manuel Pinto de Meneses; MARTINS, Sónia Patrícia Vilar  and  FERNANDES, Lia Paula Nogueira Sousa. Depression and quality of life in patients with asthma: A narrative literature review. Rev Port Imunoalergologia [online]. 2023, vol.31, n.2, pp.109-122.  Epub June 30, 2023. Asthma is a heterogeneous respiratory disease characterized by chronic airway inflammation, that affects more than 300 million people worldwide and approximately 700 thousand people in Portugal. Even though the link between chronic diseases and mental health disorders is well known, nowadays mental health is still often not taken into account in the clinical approach of the patient with asthma. This narrative literature review aims to explore the current evidence on how depression and quality of life relate to asthma. This review also addresses the main therapeutic interventions that have shown promise in clinical indicators of depression and quality of life applied to asthmatic patients, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, antidepressant drugs, physical exercise and respiratory training.

Keywords : Asthma; depression; quality of life.
