Abstract

ANDRADE, J. P. Vieira de et al. Ectasia vascular do antro gástrico como causa de anemia ferropénica crónica: A propósito de um caso clínico. J Port Gastrenterol. [online]. 2008, vol.15, n.5, pp.211-214. ISSN 0872-8178.

Described for the first time by Jabbari et al in 1984, gastric antral vascular ectasia represents one of the rarest causes of gastrointestinal bleeding and severe iron deficiency anemia. Its ethiology is yet unknown, however its phisiophatology determines original aspects which resembles the markings on watermelon. Therefore, it is also called watermelon stomach. We report a 79-year-old patient, with several hospitalizations due to severe ferropenic anemia, non responsive to medical or argon-plasma endoscopic treatment. He underwent surgical treatment, and histopathology showed typical details of the condition. Literature is reviewed.
