Abstract

AZEVEDO, António Manuel Tavares; EIRA, Paulo; LOURENCO, Carla  and  ALMEIDA, Marisa. Gymnastics in children's development. Mill [online]. 2022, n.esp11, pp.14-21.  Epub Dec 31, 2022. ISSN 0873-3015.  https://doi.org/10.29352/mill0211e.27284.

Introduction:

Gymnastics contributes to the education and development of children, as well as in the various proposals associated with Physical Education (PE) in Elementary School. These activities allow self-confidence and enthusiasm, reflected on children´s performance, persistence, well-being, self-esteem and their ability to concentrate.

Objectives:

This study aims to assess the importance of technical activities for the motor development and education of children and whether schools promote and create spaces for the development of these activities.

Methods:

The study group comprises 2 distinct sets, totaling 36 children. The BOT2 motor proficiency test was used and, later, descriptive and inferential analysis of the data was used using the 28th version 28 of Statistical Software SPSS.

Results:

Significant differences were evidenced between groups regarding the degree of fine motor precision, fine motor integration and manual dexterity.

Conclusion:

Gymnastics contributes to children´s cross-sectional development, associated with numerous biopsychosocial benefits. Its activities developed in school, through PE, allow the recreation of gestures and other elements in various contexts, especially in the self-directed activities of school playgrounds. PE plays a crucial role in children´s social integration and, Gymnastics in particular, makes them a more active and conscious citizen, also providing body autonomy and increased capacity for expression in groups.
