Abstract

PEIXOTO, Daniela; RAMOS, Joana; ALMEIDA, Paulo  and  PIMENTEL, Iva. How to improve the child and adolescent health? Some concerns, advice and reflection. Mill [online]. 2023, n.esp13, e29495.  Epub Dec 31, 2023. ISSN 0873-3015.  https://doi.org/10.29352/mill0213e.29495.

Introduction:

Primary health care represents the first level of intervention in health services. In pediatrics, rigorous surveillance is extremely important, as it influences growth and biopsychosocial well-being, with repercussions in adulthood.

Objective:

Describe the main concerns felt in child and youth health surveillance consultations and review the issues that should deserve special attention in these consultations.

Methods:

Retrospective analysis of the parameters evaluated in the child and youth health consultations during a six-month internship at a model A Family Health Unit.

Results:

During the internship, we carried out 423 consultations, of which 385 were surveillance (91%). The main reasons for concern were errors in eating (n=48; 11.3%), oral hygiene (n=36; 8.5%) sleeping habits (n=52; 12.3%), and neurodevelopmental disorders (n=32, 7.6%).

Conclusion:

In child and youth health consultations, it’s crucial to undertake a complete assessment according to age and to provide advice for healthy growth and development. Anticipatory care should be valued and when warning signs are detected, early intervention needs to be provided. Child and youth health surveillance is an important challenge for health promotion and disease prevention. The cooperation between physicians, family members/caregivers, and professionals who contact children on a daily basis is essential.
