Abstract

LOBO, Natália Santos; TELLES, Liliam  and  HILLENKAMP, Isabelle. ALTERNATIVE ECONOMIES, ULTRALIBERALISM AND PANDEMIC: WOMEN IN AGROECOLOGY IN BRAZIL. SOCIOLOGIA ON LINE [online]. 2023, n.31, pp.59-75.  Epub July 27, 2023. ISSN 1647-3337.  https://doi.org/10.30553/sociologiaonline.2023.31.4.

The ultraliberal and authoritarian orientation of Brazilian governments since 2016 have implied the dismantling of public policies to support alternative economies and have placed their subjects in a crisis scenario, deepened by the COVID-19 pandemic. This article aims to contribute, from a feminist perspective, to the reflection on the meaning of this moment in the trajectory of agroecology as part of alternative economies in Brazil. It is based on a survey of agroecological women farmers’ organizations conducted in 2020 in two regions of the country, through interviews carried out face-to-face and virtually. It proposes a conceptual framework of alternative economies, articulating democracy, public spaces, solidarity, economic plurality and gender. It highlights the conflicting effects of women’s role in agroecology, between building solidarity markets, increasing production and gaining autonomy, on the one hand, and reproducing the sexual division of labour and work overload, on the other.

Keywords : agroecology; gender; COVID-19; Brazil..
