Abstract

MENDEZ, Gabriel de Pinna; FERNANDO MAHLER, Claudio  and  REGINA TAQUETTE, Stella. Qualitative Research in a Period of Social Detachment: The Challenge of Conducting Remote Interviews. NTQR [online]. 2021, vol.9, pp.336-343.  Epub Dec 20, 2021. ISSN 2184-7770.  https://doi.org/10.36367/ntqr.9.2021.336-343.

The present work sought to evaluate the performance of interviews in remote mode as a way of using this tool in qualitative research, in the period of social distance. 18 remote interviews were carried out as part of a study to assess the difficulties faced in the selective collection of solid waste in the city. from an important Brazil city , a study that is in the phase of data analysis. The interviews were conducted with the use of several tools, depending on the availability of means of the interviewees such as Microsoft Teams software, Google Meet, Zoom and even via video call via cell phone application (mobile phone). The average duration of the interviews was 40 minutes and despite the difficulties encountered, such as the signing of the Free and Informed Consent Term - IC and the oscillation of the internet signal, it was found that remote interviews are feasible, allowing interaction between the researcher and the interviewee and the fulfillment of ethical requirements in research, but they should only be carried out in cases of need, such as the COVID-19 Pandemic or another need for social isolation on the part of the researcher or the interviewee. As a positive point in the remote interview, the easiness in the recording and transcription of the interviews stands out.
