ISSN 0870-8231. https://doi.org/10.14417/ap.1142.
Social support has been shown in the literature as relevance with respect to the planning and establishment of young adolescent life goals. Adverse emotional experiences within the family, including significant losses and transitions may, however, limit this process. This research aims to analyze the role of social support in the development of life goals of young people from different family configurations (traditional families and young people in residential care), still being tested the mediating role of personality in the previous association. The sample was composed by 350 young Portuguese adolescents of both genders, aged between 13 and 18 years, from traditional families and residential care. For data collection was used the Social Support Appraisals (SSA), Purpose in Life Test (PIL-R) and The Five Factors Personality Inventory (NEO-FFI-20). Mediation models were tested for different family configurations, and the results suggested that social support has a significant positive association with the life goals, and personality plays a mediational effect in the previous association. The results will be discussed in light of attachment theory, considering the importance of social support in personality development and construction of life projects.
