Resumen

CASTANO, David. The Great War and the Portuguese International Relations: from the Monarchy to the Republic. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2014, n.42, pp.63-77. ISSN 1645-9199.

In this article we seek to recover some of the ideas that help to explain the Portuguese participation in the Great War and the option of the Democratic Party of sending troops to the European front. A full understanding of the Portuguese participation in the War requires not only a reference to its antecedents, but a comprehensive view of internal and external dynamics. In the domestic context we must take into consideration the monarchy/republic dichotomy and also the differences that quickly divided the Republican field. In the external context we must take into account three traditional vectors of Portuguese foreign policy: the Anglo-Portuguese alliance; the peninsular duality and the empire.

Palabras clave : World War I; Portugal; Monarchy; Republic.
