OTJES, Simon y KROUWEL, André. The rise of the new cultural dimension: understanding the Dutch 2017 elections. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2017, n.56, pp.39-59. ISSN 1645-9199. https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2017.56a03.
The 2017 Dutch elections saw dramatic results: the governing Liberal-Labour coalition lost half its voters. We analyse the results of the 2017 elections as a result of the changing dimensions of conflict in particular the rise of the new cultural dimension divides those who seek to defend the national interest and identity from those who prefer international cooperation and a multicultural conception of identity. At the same time economic issues have become two-dimensional. The new cultural dimension now structures voters' policy opinions on many issues including immigration and EU integration, but also the environment. It is key in understanding how voters conceive of left and right and for understanding which parties voters vote for.
