RAMOS, Pedro Farrajota. Chinese investment in Portugal and in Italy and its impact in the European Union. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2021, n.71, pp.67-86. Epub 30-Sep-2021. ISSN 1645-9199. https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2021.71a05.
The debates around Chinese investment and the detrimental effects that this could have on states that receive it have led the European Union (EU) to move forward with initiatives to protect its countries’ interests. The emergence of populism in Italy, associated with a growing Euroscepticism and political instability, decisively influenced Italy’s foreign policy on Chinese investment-related matters, which led its communication strategies to affect the EU during some periods. Alternatively, the Portuguese internal stability and favorable opinion of the EU led Portugal to manage its relations with China, generally taking into account the preservation of the European vector’s stability.
