CAMPOS, José y TAVARES, Mário. Influence of the Long Length and Origin in the Profit and Value Optimizations of the Maritime Pine Round Wood. Silva Lus. [online]. 2010, vol.18, n.2, pp.123-132. ISSN 0870-6352.
A logging protocol has been proposed as an adjuvant to optimal round wood profit in clear cutting of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton) even-aged plantations. To assess the benefit of this logging protocol, the results were evaluated by comparison with current field operator output. A logging protocol was attempted in 35 mature trees [mean (SD) volume 1.64 (0.44) m3], from Leiria National Forest. Gross income estimates are in Euros, based on 1997 wood products international market values. Despite, field reality generated a larger sawn logs number, produced a huge amount of wasted timber and a less valuable volume partitioning. As a result, the logging protocol presents a higher economical potential. Hence, the management planning for maritime pine harvesting must be improved in order to obtain better results. Otherwise, the local forest industry will suffer negative consequences, and this valuable resource will not be profitable in the future. A logging protocol is feasible, easy to make and can improve the value of round wood about 150%.
