PINTO, Luiz Cortez; PAIVA, António; CHAINHO, Julieta y REIS, Filipe Damas dos. Treatment of schizoprenics patients. Depot neuroleptics versus oral neuroleptics: A three years comparative trial. Psicologia [online]. 2000, vol.14, n.1, pp.45-50. ISSN 0874-2049.
Non compliance is a major problem in the treatment of schizophrenic patients, the present study compares the efficacy between oral neuroleptics and depot neuroleptics in preventing non-compliance. Medical charts of 183 schizophrenic patients receiving neuroleptics for a period longer than three years were enrolled in a study to compare the efficacy of two different neuroleptics treatments. One group receives only oral neuroleptics (no) and the other depot neuroleptics (ndm). The group on depot neuroleptics had fewer relapses, rehospitalizations, and lesser hospitalisation days. Switching a patient on no to ndm could be a good option for treatment-refractory patients or those with poor oral compliance.
