DANIEL, Fernanda; SIMOES, Teresa y MONTEIRO, Rosa. Social representations of male and female ageing. Ex aequo [online]. 2012, n.26, pp.13-26. ISSN 0874-5560.
The study analyses the social representations about male and female ageing, through the technique of Free Association of Words. It confirms the prevalence of negative ageism stereotyping, the association of aging with dependence, as well as the homogenizing impact of institutionalization. Also, it was possible to highlight the emergence of some differences in the classification of male and female aging. The first anchors mostly on dependency and on the loss of functionality. In the female aging emerged attributes such as strength, kindness and dedication, related with gender roles, namely with care. The aesthetic and physical representations, also, appears exclusively in the representations of older women.
