SOUZA, Flávia et al. Cognition, humor and self-esteem of elderly adults after cognitive stimulation. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.3, pp.806-817.  Epub 31-Dic-2022. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/22psd230318.

The aging process is accompanied by a decline in cognitive functions, however interventions such as cognitive stimulation workshops can improve performance and promote the maintenance of cognitive abilities in the elderly. Objective: to evaluate the effects of a cognitive stimulation program on cognition, mood and self-esteem in mature and elderly adults. The sample consisted of 48 mature and elderly adults who belonged to a cohabitation center for the elderly, who participated in twelve workshops of cognitive stimulation. Participants were divided into two groups: intervention group (GI) n = 27 and control group (GC) n = 21 and evaluated using the following instruments: sociodemographic questionnaire, Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination Revised (ACE-R), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), and Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale. It was observed that the cognitive performance of the GI improved significantly after participating in the workshops, specifically regarding global cognition and the visuo-spatial domain, there was also a decrease in the depression score and an improvement in self-esteem when compared to CG. These findings suggest that group cognitive stimulation workshops strengthens the participants' social support network and contributes to improved cognitive and mood functions.
