Commercial aircraft operators and military air forces are searching for a solution to reduce maintenance costs and increase the availability of their fleets. To achieve this objective, the control and monitoring of corrosion of the aircraft airframe will be an important tool for operators, in order to optimize their fleet. OGMA, together with Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and the University of Manchester, is developing several types of corrosion sensors for specific critical areas of an aircraft, which have been previously identified, in order to allow for corrosion monitoring and, thus, for a better aircraft maintenance schedule. This paper contains a review of the sensors in development by other companies and by us, in the frame of the cooperation referred above.
