Resumen

MONTENEGRO, Susana. Protein and wound healing. Nutrícias [online]. 2012, n.14, pp.27-30. ISSN 2182-7230.

A wound causes numerous changes in the body due to a catabolic process that leads to increased energy and nutrient requirements. A protein intake, nutrient essential in all phases of the healing process, adjusted to each situation is critical and there is no consensus yet on the subject. The arginine and glutamine, two amino acids involved in various stages of the healing process, become conditionally essential in stress situations. Several authors have described the benefits in supplementation with these nutrients, however further studies are needed to assess the impact and effectiveness of supplementation in wound healing as well as establishing a safe and effective therapeutic dose. Supplementation may be beneficial in individuals with nutritional deficiencies, malnutrition or in severe catabolic state but does not replace a full, balanced and varied diet.

Palabras clave : Protein; Glutamine; Arginine; Healing; Wounds.
