^lpt^aEste artigo estuda a restrição dos direitos políticos em Portugal nos séculos XIX e XX. Argumenta-se que essa restrição derivou originalmente da concepção «republicana» da cidadania como uma identidade colectiva e do modo como essa concepção legitimou a exclusão política e social. O artigo abre, assim, o caminho para uma crítica ao «neo-republicanismo», tal como este se desenvolve durante a década de 1990.^lfr^aL’article étudie la restriction des droits politiques au Portugal au cours des XIX^e et XX^e siècles. En ouvrant ainsi la voie à une critique du «néo-républicanisme», tel qu’il s’est développé pendant la décennie de 1990.^len^aThis article looks at the restrictions on political rights in Portugal in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is argued here that these restrictions derived originally from the «republican» idea of citizenship as a collective identity, and the way that idea justified political and social exclusion. This opens the way to a critique of the «neo-republicanism» which emerged in the 1990s.
