^lpt^aEste artigo analisa relatos sobre o que se passou a seguir ao terramoto que se fez sentir em Lisboa em 1755 e procura interpretá-los com os conceitos e teorias utilizados para compreender o pensamento leigo sobre o risco sísmico nos dias de hoje. Em particular, recorre-se a perspectivas psicológicas da percepção de riscos e da adaptação cognitiva, a alguns conceitos da teoria cultural e ao modelo da amplificação social do risco para ilustrar os processos de construção social de significado para o desastre. Salienta-se a funcionalidade destas interpretações em 1755, quer a nível individual de gestão do medo, quer a nível colectivo de reforço das identidades.^len^aThis article analyzes reports of what happened after the earthquake which struck Lisbon in 1755 and seeks to interpret them with the concepts and theories used to understand lay thought on modern-day earthquake risk. In particular, this article adopts psychological approaches to risk perception and cognitive adaptation, concepts from cultural theory, and the social amplification of risk model to illustrate how the meaning of the disaster is socially constructed. Emphasis is placed on the functionality of these interpretations in 1755, both at the individual level of managing fear and at the collective level of reinforcing identities.
