^lpt^aSobre os grupos sociais que constituíam a chamada “pequena burguesia” não existe para o Portugal contemporâneo uma análise de conjunto, ou sequer uma série de artigos que potenciem uma linha de investigação capaz de trazer alguma luz sobre este setor da sociedade. Esta relativa escassez resulta particularmente estranha, se tivermos em conta o que alguns autores referem ter sido o papel, por exemplo, dos lojistas na conjuntura política e social do período final da monarquia. Através de uma análise detalhada da evolução do pequeno comércio em Lisboa e do seu discurso político e social, pretende-se aqui apontar uma hipótese explicativa para a sua adesão ao republicanismo a partir do início da década de 1890.^len^aAbout the petty bourgeoisie in contemporary Portugal there isn’t an overall research work or even a series of articles that encourage a line of research to shed some light on this sector of society. This relative scarcity is particularly strange, if one takes into account what some authors refer to have been the role, for example, of shopkeepers in the social and political conjuncture of the final period of the monarchy. Through a detailed analysis of the development of small businesses in Lisbon, and about the political and social discourse of the shopkeepers, this work is intended to point out one possible explanation for the path to the Republic that these men started to take in the early 1890s.
