From the enunciation of a musical progressive structuring and dissolution of functionality, hierarchy and directionality in, successively, the medieval modes, tonality, and atonality and serialism, as well as, in cultural theory, a transformation of a cyclic to a linear conception of temporality and its dissolution, a parallel is drawn between the two domains, showing the cultural nature of music materials and processes.
