^lpt^aA adopção e utilização das novas tecnologias de informação e comunicação nos mais diversos sectores de actividade económica têm vindo a dar origem a novos e interessantes modelos de negócio. Entre as possibilidades com que hoje nos deparamos, e pelo especial interesse de que se reveste para os sectores agrícola, destacamos o denominado “m-Business”. O “m-Business” pode ser definido como o uso de tecnologias móveis para promover a troca de bens, serviços, informação e conhecimento. Este modelo envolve um vasto leque de actividades móveis, incluindo a comunicação entre pessoas recorrendo ao correio electrónico, a possibilidade de receber informação relativa a produtos em alertas via serviço de mensagens curta (SMS) da telefonia móvel ou a recolha de informação de campo com assistentes pessoais digitais (PDA) sem fios. O “m-Business” inclui não só aplicações para os consumidores finais, mas também soluções empresariais que permitem às empresas operar de for ma mais eficiente, servir melhor os seus clientes e gerar receitas adicionais. Ao nível interno das organizações, pode ainda afectar a forma como estas gerem as suas actividades, organizam os seus recursos humanos e controlam a utilização dos seus recursos materiais. O “m-Business”, ao apostar na convergência da telefonia móvel com as tecnologias da Internet, tendo em vista suportar a utilização das novas tecnologias de informação e comunicação em qualquer lugar e a qualquer momento, terá um elevado potencial de utilização para o sector agrícola, onde a componente espacial e a necessidade de acompanhar o negócio no terreno são uma realidade constante para os agentes que intervêm neste espaço. Neste trabalho serão apresentadas algumas iniciativas nacionais que têm vindo a ser lançadas no sector agrícola tirando partido das soluções da computação móvel e tirar algumas conclusões sobre o potencial desta abordagem para o sector agrícola. Iremos, ainda, apresentar alguns desenvolvimentos que se estão a verificar neste campo, em especial na vertente das redes de comunicação, onde o advento da tecnologia denominada de “WiMax” leva a antever o acesso à Internet em banda larga no mundo rural.^len^aThe new information and communication technologies adoption and use in the different economy sectors are being responsible for the generation of new and interesting business models. Amongst the possibilities we face today and by the potential it offers to the agricultural sector we call the attention to the “m-Business”. The “m-Business” can be defined as using mobile Technologies to support goods, services, information and knowledge exchange. This model includes a wide range of mobile activities, namely communication between people using electronic mail, the possibility to receive products information through short messages services or collecting field information with wireless personal digital assistants. The “m-Business” refers not only to final consumers applications but also enterprise solutions that support organizations in their relations with the costumers and generate additional profits. This model by using the convergence of mobile phone and Internet Technologies to support the new information and communication technologies use anywhere anytime has a high potential for the agricultural field where the spatial component and the need to follow the business in the field are the daily concerns of the managers acting in this field. In this work we will present some national initiatives that are being launched in the agricultural field taking advantage from mobile computing solutions and draw some conclusions about their potential to the agricultural sector. We will also present some developments under way in this field specially in the communication networks field where the “WiMax” technology big promises can make us believe that in the near future we will have broad band access in the rural areas.
