TRIVINO, Ignacio Llanos. Protection system for rain gauges. []. , 37, 4, pp.408-413. ISSN 0871-018X.

A rotating support has been adapted for the development of a new rain gauge which aims to prevent the dirt accumulation in the collecting cylinder, common cause of errors in the rainfall records. The device maintains the rain gauge rotated 180° in the absence of any rain event. When the rain occurs, a sensor detects it and initiates the rotation of the gauge into the measuring position. When the rain ceases, and after an adjustable times period, the rain gauge is rotated back to the non-activity position. The device has proven a good performance reliability and operational efficiency during the trial tests. With the type of sensor currently used the average delay to recording position with a rain rate of 10 mm h-1 is 1.33 s. After the rain stops, the rain gauge returns to the protect position within 30 s. The difference in the protective equipment records with respect to the conventional rain gauge was 0.06 mm, a difference that might be due more to the calibration process than to the own characteristics.
