^lpt^aA tendência atual de ampliação do número de pessoas na faixa etária acima de 60 anos, fenômeno conhecido como envelhecimento populacional, vem transformando o perfil das famílias brasileiras. Geralmente, os idosos eram vistos como seres dependentes, mas, nos últimos anos, essa tendência está se modificando e uma nova realidade está surgindo. Para entender as modificações que vêm ocorrendo dentro das famílias e sua relação com o envelhecimento populacional, relacionaram-se algumas variáveis que fizeram parte de uma pesquisa qualitativa e são trazidas agora para discussão neste artigo. Esta pesquisa teve como recorte o “idoso provedor” que através do benefício da previdência social (aposentadoria e pensões) é o mantenedor de sua família, em um município de médio porte do interior do Rio Grande do Sul. Os resultados apontam para uma velhice que é heterogênea, com diferenças marcantes em relação a gênero e com novos arranjos familiares que se formam a partir da questão econômica.^len^aThe current trend of increasing the number of people aged over 60 years, a phenomenon known as aging population, has transformed the profile of Brazilian families. Generally, the elderly were seen as dependent beings, but in recent years, this trend is changing and a new reality is emerging. To understand the changes that are occurring within families and their relationship with the aging population, some variables that were part of a qualitative search were analysed and are now brought for discussion in this article. This research has cut out the “old provider” that through the benefit from social security (retirement and pensions) is the keeper of the family in a medium-sized city of Rio Grande do Sul. The results point to an old age profile that is heterogeneous, with marked differences in relation to gender and new family arrangements that were derived from the economic issue.
