FERRAZ, M. Fernanda    PEREIRA, Anabela Sousa. Personality and homesickness in young university students . []. , 3, 2, pp.149-164. ISSN 1645-0086.

From a methodological point of view framed in an empiric-analytic perspective this research aims to alert for the need of developing skills which will enable students to deal with this transition process, suggesting the application of prophylactic measures at the high school level, which will prevent the appearance of unsuccessful patterns, school drop-out and personality structuring problems, promoting student adaptation. The results show the most visible personality feature in such students is extroversion. Yet female students show more trends to present a personality feature of neuroticism than male students. We have verified a positive correlation between homesickness and neuroticism, i.e., the more homesick a student feels, the bigger the trend that same student shows towards neuroticism and vice-versa. With extroversion the correlation is negative, that is, the more extrovert students are the less homesick they feel. In light of these results it is important to meet the need to promote well-being at the university promoting personal support, organizational support and inter-relational support that involves the students and allows them to invest in their academic formation in a successful way.
