TEIXEIRA, Filipa    MAIA, Ângela. Predictors of unsuccessfulness in laparoscopic adjustable gastric band: a literature review. []. , 12, 2, pp.212-223. ISSN 1645-0086.

The prevalence of obesity has risen dramatically, leading to an increasing demand for efficient and lasting surgical procedures, against the inefficacy of conventional treatments. The Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band has been considered the most effective intervention, presenting high success rates. However, it appears that the results are not always kept for a long period of time, confirming the increase in the number of failures recorded recently. This paper presents a literature review about the factors that may explain the unsuccessful cases of bariatric surgery. Psychopathological symptoms as depression, anxiety and compulsive food intake emerge as some of the key predictors of this failure. This article ends with a suggestion of some research areas that may contribute to a better understanding of individual’s adaptation after bariatric surgery in order to improve the effectiveness of this procedure.
