This theoretical review article is dedicated to the discussion of health psychology from three main points: it shows the historical setting of its birth, punctuating some disagreements as to its nationality; it presents classic and current concepts; it shows the development process of the Brazilian branch, pointing to a definition of health intervention levels as an alternative in assisting psychologists in their health care. It defines health psychology as a wide and autonomous discipline in terms of both social and hospital psychology. It claims that health psychology, with its interdisciplinary characteristics, adds to knowledge in other disciplines. It presents the relationship between intervention and health care complexity levels as a solution to problems of theoretical understanding and practical intervention. It concludes pointing out that clinical psychology and hospital context psychology should be understood as psychological care models belonging to health psychology.
