The objective of this study is to analyze the influence of attitudes and knowledge in the social construction of AIDS and their meanings. It is an integrative review, performed in BDENF databases, LILACS and MEDLINE / PubMed, the period from 2010 to 2014. 26 articles were selected and analyzed and then pointed out to the existence of the social stigma attached to people living with HIV / Aids, a fact that complicates the prevention of the epidemic and health care. Understand and deal with the stigma in relation to PLWHA is an essential part of the response to the epidemic and promotion of health, dignity and positive prevention. As well as with health professional studies to identify possible aspects which affect the quality of communication and care to enable more effective interventions in health promotion and in response to the HIV epidemic.
